Dance of the Vampires

For the first time on vinyl, Krzysztof Komeda's score for Roman Polanski's "Dance of the Vampires," also known as "The Fearless Vampire Killers or Pardon Me, but Your Teeth are in my Neck" comes at us thanks to Series Aphonos.  The soundtrack is haunting and eerie and groovy, the perfect match for Polanski's old aesthetic.  Listen to the theme below.

SXSW 2014, Day 1

Managed to get my ass out to a free day show today at The Lost Well in east Austin.  Surly Fest consisted of psych-tinged garage rock bands to get the blood flowing hot and free beer to ease the brain away.  Here are a few pics.
The Happen-Ins

Quality Floods

Gymshorts

MODRAG

The Cosmonauts

The GOASTT (Ghost of a Sabre Tooth Tiger)

The Goastt or more aptly, The Ghost of a Sabre Tooth Tiger is the duo of Sean Lennon (yes, that Sean Lennon) and Charlotte Kemp Muhl.  The two artists pack a bunch of psych rock, pop, folk, and weirdness into a brown paper bag, shake the shit out of it, and then see what transpires.  It's pretty and trippy and kind of intoxicating in its own way.  Take a listen to "Moth to a Flame" below and look for the "Midnight Sun" LP in April on Lennon's Chimera Music label.

White Lung - Drown with the Monster

One of the acts i was fortunate enough to catch at last year's SXSW was the noise/punk outfit White Lung.  The band just released a new single (their first with new label Domino), "Drown with the Monster," a full-on sonic assault that scratches you in the face and then spits in your eye.  I like it.  Watch the video below.

Found Vinyl: Claudine Longet - Colours

"Colours" is the 1968 album from French pop/folk singer and actress Claudine Longet.  Longet was popular in the 60's and 70's, releasing a handful of albums (featuring a lot of cover material), but disappeared from the limelight after she was convicted of criminally negligent homicide in the murder of her then boyfriend, Olympic skier Spider Sabich.  Salacious affairs and murder aside, Claudine sings lovely, wistful little pop-folk tunes to while away the hours to...working in a garden or something.  Take a listen to the Randy Newman assisted (on piano) "I Think it's Gonna Rain Today" below.

And here's "Am I Blue?" below.

And finally, the title track (a Donovan cover).

Symbol

Symbol is the new solo project of Christopher Royal King (This Will Destroy You).  The Austin artist crafts some brilliant ambient and drone compositions on the upcoming "Online Architecture" LP, due out next month on Holodeck Records.  Take a listen to "Clear Passage" below.  It sounds like lifting a veil and entering the afterlife.

Here's a new warped and dirty electro-psych track from Black Moth Super Rainbow member Tobacco.  "Eruption (Gonna Get my Hair Cut at the End of the Summer)" comes from the forthcoming album "Ultima II Massage," due in May on Ghostly.  Listen and tweak below.

Record Store Day 2014 releases are starting to leak here and there, and it appears that the good folks over at Death Waltz have four soundtrack releases lined up from composers Nicola Piovani, Nico Fidenco, Walter Rizzati, and Clint Mansell.  Listen to the sampler below and be lined up early on April 19th.
