Real Numbers

The Laughing Chimes

Before Ohio band The Laughing Chimes released last year's fantastic "Whispers in the Speech Machine" LP, they were working on something a little lighter and janglier than that album turned out being.  That work is seeing the light of day next month with the impending release of "Behind Your Blue Fields," a collection of songs and demos that just didn't fit the first time around.  Check out the wonderfully poppy title track below and pre-order the cassette here from Slumberland.

The Telephone Numbers

San Francisco band The Telephone Numbers make a lovely mix of jangle pop, psych pop, and college radio rock, little throwback indie earworms for young and old.  The group's new album "Scarecrow II" is out next month.  Pre-order it here from Slumberland Records and listen to "Battle of Blythe Road" below.

Jeanines

Sometimes the only thing that will scratch that aural itch is a little jangly college rock.  And so we have Massachusetts band Jeanines and their new album "How Long Can It Last."  Album opener "To Fail" hits all those right notes like something coming out of an Athens radio station in the '80s.  Check it out below and and get the LP here from Slumberland.

The Laughing Chimes - High Beams (Dead End Mix)

Earlier this year, Athens, Ohio band The Laughing Chimes released one of my favorite records of the year with "Whispers in the Speech Machine."  This week, they dropped an alternate mix of one of the tracks from that album.  I might prefer this version, which plays more like a noisy post punk track than the jangle pop of the original.  Listen to "High Beams (Dead End Mix)" below and download it here from Slumberland Records.

Chime School

Sometimes, there's just nothing that's gonna scratch that sonic itch quite like some harmonious jangle pop.  And San Francisco's Chime School can belt out the jangles like few others.  The band's new album "The Boy Who Ran the Paisley Hotel" is out later this month via Slumberland.  Check out lead off tune "The End" below and pre-order the LP here.

Torrey

Keeping the dreampop thing going this morning with new music from Oakland indie pop band Torrey.  The band play a sweet mix of shoegaze and pop with just a little jangle in the sound for good measure.  Check out "No Matter How" below and pre-order the band's self-titled album here from Slumberland Records.

Peel Dream Magazine

LA artist Peel Dream Magazine has a new album coming our way next month.  Gone are the shoegaze sounds of 2020's "Agitprop Alterna," and in are the airy and baroque psychedelic kosmische sounds the artist describes as space-age bachelor pad music.  Check out "Pictionary" below and pre-order "Pad" here from Slumberland Records.

Business of Dreams

LA artist Business of Dreams put out a pretty good album of smoky, dreamy synth pop back in 2017, and now a follow-up is headed our way next month.  "Ripe For Anarchy" drops on February 1st on Slumberland Records.  Listen to album closer "Keep the Blues Away" below and pre-order the album here.

Proper Ornaments

Ultimate Painting's James Hoare (also of the band Veronica Falls) has another project in the works, Proper Ornaments, with Max Oscarnold of Toy.  "Cremated (Blown Away)" has a soothing and jangly feel to it, a kind of gentle indie psych pop to while away the time to.  Listen below and grab the "Foxhole" LP in January from Slumberland.

Black Hearted Brother

Early 90's shoegaze act Slowdive have been one of my all-time favorite bands for a long time now, so any time former front man Neil Halstead gets involved in some new music, i take notice, especially when that new work is something as spacey and dreamy and beautiful as "(I Don't Mean To) Wonder," the first release from Halstead's new project with Mark Van Hoen (Seefeel, Locust) and Nick Holton called Black Hearted Brother.  The trio's "Stars Are Our Home" is out in October on Slumberland Records.  I cannot recommend this enough.  Listen below.
