Holy Motors

Estonian alt-rock group Holy Motors dropped a twangy and reverby new track earlier this week with "Heaven's Night."  It sounds like watching a sunset in the desert.  Check it out below and download it here from Wharf Cat Records.

Bambara

Brooklyn band Bambara are gracing us with a new album next March with the upcoming "Birthmarks" LP.  Dig on the creep, croon, and chug of first single "Pray to Me" below and pre-order the album here from Wharf Cat.

Holy Motors

Here's a new piece of dusty, dreamy, Americana-tinged pop from Estonian band Holy Motors.  The group carries a world weariness to them that belies their youth.  Really good stuff.  Look for them in a roadhouse somewhere this side of David Lynch.  Check out "Country Church" below and pre-order the upcoming "Horse" LP here from Wharf Cat.

Bambara

I totally slept on Bambara's new album coming out last week.  The Brooklyn band make a dark and moody blend of goth, post punk, and Americana, influenced by the old sounds of Nick Cave and more.  Listen to the album opening "Miracle" below and snag the new "Stray" LP here via Wharf Cat.

Gong Gong Gong

Beijing duo Gong Gong Gong's latest release, the full length LP "Phantom Rhythm," finds the artists merging such distinct influences and desert blues, noise rock, drone, and Cantonese opera to create something truly their own, a kind of worldly, lo-fi blues.  Check out "Notes Underground" below and get the record here from Wharf Cat.

Bambara

Brooklyn's Bambara have a new record of noisy, post punk headed our way in February of next year.  Check out the lead single, "Serafina," a burst of reverbed punk with just a dash of Bad Seeds thrown in the mix below, and then pre-order the upcoming "Stray" LP here via Wharf Cat.

Gong Gong Gong

Here's some stripped down psych blues from Beijing duo Gong Gong Gong for this cold December morning.  "Siren" chugs and grooves along, crunchy guitar tones soothing the eardrums like a cooling balm.  Listen below and grab the self-titled 7" here from Wharf Cat.

Wharf Cat Records releasing ACLU Benefit Album

Hey folks, nothing makes the heart grow like donating money to a worthy cause, and if you get some tunes out of the deal, none the better.  Brooklyn record label Wharf Cat Records is set to release a 2LP compilation featuring bands like The Men, Merchandise, Psychic Blood, and more on April 20th, with almost 95% of the proceeds benefiting the ACLU.  It's a good cause and a good deal, and it will make you feel good about yourself...if even just for a fleeting moment.  Check out Alice Cohen's off-kilter pop contribution "Hourglass" below and get more info/pre-order here.

Holy Motors

I first got clued on to Estonian band Holy Motors and their particular band of dreamy, desert shoegaze on last year's "Sleeprydr," a hazy little piece of psych-tinged pop that would have paired perfectly with "Twin Peaks."  And now we've got a full-length from the band out this week from Wharf Cat.  The "Slow Sundown" LP picks up right where last year's 7" left off to wonderful effect.  Listen to the Mazzy Star meets Lee Hazlewood vibes of "Honeymooning" below.

Profligate

Experimental electronic artist Profligate is back with today's new album, "Somewhere Else."  An oozing and haunting mix of noise, drone, and darkwave synth, the record sounds akin to summoning neon demons in a smoky crypt somewhere in a dilapidated and crumbling city.  Listen to the title track below and grab the album here via Wharf Cat.

WALL - Save Me

I've been looking forward to the debut LP from New York post punk band WALL ever since i saw them perform way back during SXSW last year.  And i don't have too much longer to wait, with "Untitled" scheduled for release at the end of this month on Wharf Cat.  Unfortunately, it appears that the band has called it quits, and thus the debut will also be the swan song.  Bummer.  Listen to the excellent "Save Me" below.

Wall - High Ratings

I caught New York punk band Wall last year at SXSW, and was thoroughly impressed with the band's hostile brand of post punk noise.  Looks like we're finally getting an as yet to be titled full-length LP from the group in April on Wharf Cat.  Listen to album opener "High Ratings" below.

Holy Motors

Here's a haunting little psych jam from Holy Motors' upcoming new 7" on Wharf Cat.  "Sleeprydr" sounds trippy but a little menacing, like some shadowy figure stalking the streets at night.  Listen below and snag the record later this month.

Wall

Later this week, i'll post a bunch of pics of my SXSW antics this year...they are getting increasingly tamer as i get older.  Boo.  Anyway, today i caught some great punk acts, one of them being the New York four piece Wall, an abrasive, but grooving band trading in a mix of No Wave and post punk.  Their "WALL EP" from Wharf Cat is sold out, but you can still grab the download of the record here.  In the meantime, listen to "Milk" below.

David Vassalotti

Let's focus on a different David for a little while.  In this case, it's David Vassalotti, the guitarist for the jangly and excellent band Merchandise.  Vassalotti has a solo album, "Broken Rope," coming out next month on Wharf Cat.  Listen to the single, "Lady Day Redux," below, a rollicking, guitar-driven groove of a jam.

Psychic Blood

Still working on a natural high from my Longhorns' victory yesterday, so much so, that i don't even care that my Saints are basically a burning garbage barge sinking into the Mississippi River.  So, let's listen to some hazy, noisy, possibly drug-fueled guitar treatment from Massachusetts band Psychic Blood.  "Blur World" hails from the band's new album "Alien" and is a swirly, swoony wonder, sun-drenched, reverby garage rock to blast away your ears to.  Listen below and get the record from Wharf Cat.
